Question Ignition Switch

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has heard the news on the bad ignition switches in the vehicles? They say they cause the vehicle to stall. Well mine has done that several times and it takes about 10 mins before it will crank up again. Any help?

If you are referring to the stories on the news lately, your '98 is not affected by this recall investigation. I beleive the ignition system in question was used only until 1994. Yours must be related to something else.

Cool

If this is the same article I remember, the headline indicated ignition switch, yet the details of the story indicated a faulty ignition module which was subject to overheating. All the major news sources reported a similar story, apparently not understanding the difference in a switch and a module.

At any rate, it only covered vehicles from '83 to '95 or so, my '97 was not included in the settlement.

Note: settlement, not recall. You must have a failure first, you cannot repair it on a preventative basis.

The settlement will extend the warranty of the vehicle to 100,000 miles for this problem (I would bet that most of the covered cars are either already junked or well beyond the 100,000 mile limit.)

So the warranty applies only to the module, correct? I've got a 1986 E-150 that is in great shape, and has only about 85,000 miles on it. It has that module that is mounted on the distributor,it's very easy to break while replacing the thermostat. I found that out by personal experience,,,98

I have a 1987 F150 with 68000 miles and the TFI module went a few months ago. I called Ford to see what was going on with this recall and the lady said they still aren't at the phase where they'll send out any money. But she said they do not cover the labor to install the module. This doesn't make sense because I already paid for everything, towing, parts and labor. Sounds like a battle brewing...

Exclamation

How much was the labor,if you don't mind me asking,Mike? I can't remember how much I paid for the module, but the labor is a plug and two screws(or small bolts) It should not have been too much(labor) The module on the other hand,is probably way up there I'm willing to bet. Just because it was a dealer part,eh? Anyway just curious,,,,,98

The dealer ripped me off, charged me an hour labor to replace the module. He claimed it was to "diagnose and repair". Heck, if I knew it was the module, I could have easily replaced it. On my vehicle, it's in plain sight.

An hour labor is not a bad deal...I work in a private garage and it is a night mare to diagnose these vehicles..and by the time you grab your tools and get the vehicle from the lot and test drive (short) to make sure of the work....it takes time!!!!!

An hour in my mind is standard for any diagnose and repair job small or large!!!!
