Post Should Ford bring back the 4.9L Straight 6?

Should Ford bring back the 4.9L? It was a good engine, from what I hear, just needs more horsepower. But it would be weird to have a straight 6 that is bigger in displacement that their own V8!

I don't think the 4.9l would fit under the sloped hood of the f150.

The 4.9L (300 cubic in.) was a straight six not a V-6. A tough, durable engine. My father's employer ordered alot of three quarter ton work trucks and the 300 I-6 was what they ordered in them. Once you got it up to speed it did great.

The straight6 is 2 cylinders longer than the 5.4L.
It is actually the same lenght as a V12 just not as wide or as powerful.

Thumbs up

I agree that they should never have gotten rid of it. As for power, I've added a K&N kit and recently a JET chip, and I am very content with it's power. It is/was a very dependable, work horse engine.
Take care,
-Chris

From what I have read and heard, ford dropped the previous motors for the new motors because they could not make the older ones as emission friendly as the new ones.

yes, definetly they should bring back the 4.9
i've had three and they all went to 200,000+
before i had to even do anything internaly to them, they are undoubtably one tough workhorse of a MOTOR,i've had 302's and theres no comparesmenti think anyway. Personally i think they disscontinued it because it was and is to good of a motor
period.

I live in a very hilly area and I just love the way the 4.9 handles the hills in a tall gear, even with the 3.08 axle it just pulls nice and smooth. With power left over.
Plenty of torque, nearly 0% maintenance.
Just a shame that this engine was discontinued, on the job, no matter what job, it would just flat work circles around the 302.
BTW, I have nearly 120K on this engine and the only maintenance has been oil changes.
