Cool To much tranny fluid

My transmition was shifting a little harshly so i put in some Transmition Up, now my fluids a quart high....do i really have to take off the pan to get some out of there? can i just stick a small tube down the dipstic hole and suck some out? What will happen with too much tranny fluid?

I inherited a car from a family member which had been way over filled with tranny fluid. I just siphoned some out of the dip stick tube with a thin hose. It will siphon easier when hot, just don't burn your lips!

Cool

HI!... PHATTY : Don't worry about it. A lot of people don't realize that the markings on the tranny dipstick are WAY off. When I had my "RACE" tranny built for my truck I got it back and I checked my fluid. It was about a half an inch above the white plastic on the dipstick. So I went back to my tranny builder's and told him that they had massively overfilled my tranny. He said NO and that they have seen hundreds of 4R70-W trannys with damage because of insufficent fluid level. At the stock prescribed level, if you do any racing or always at a lot of high RPM's like close to 5000RPM , you get airation of the fluid in the pan and this can cause air bubbles to be introduced into the tranny's system. Air in a hydralic pump is very bad! Plus I was told that if you have any kind of shift kit installed in a 4R70-W tranny that it is VERY possible to actually suck the tranny pan dry at the stock fluid level. Hope this helps you out.

Too much is as bad as not enough....
the trans will slip if filled too much...

foaming in the trans is normal,,although undesirable...synthetics will minimize this...

The reason they are over filled from the factory is in case of a small leak...

Howdy Phatty,

I would highly recomend that you remove the Xtra trans oil. Not a good THaNG to leave a trans overfilled. To remove the oil easily goto a hardware store and purchase a 2" long 1/8" pipe thread nipple, a brass shutoff valve, a 90 degree nipple and another 2" long nipple. all these are 1/8" pipe thread. Now with your truck off. Crawl under it, look just above the trans pan and you will see several pipe plugs. If I remeber correctly they are labled. Find the one marked TV. Remove the plug, then screw in the 2" short pipe "snug" DO NOT USE ANY SEALANT ON THE THREADS!....Then screw in the shut off valve, then the 90 deg, then your short 2" nipple. Remember SNUG the trans case is aluminum. NO SEALANT.

Make sure that the shut off valve is closed. Then start your truck, leave it in park, put your emergency brake on. Then place an empty quart container into the end of the nipple and slowly open the shut off valve. After draining some fluid out, recheck your level.

If you added a quart of MaJACK TRaNNY EaRL. You probably could remove a quart, then recheck your level and you should be close. Now remove all the fitting and re-install the pipe plug "SNUG"

Best way to confirm the oil level is to take the truck out for a nice relaxing ride. About a good 25 miles. A mix of city and highway 50/50 would be good. When you get home park on a level surface. Run the trans shift lever throughout each gear position pausing for 10 secs in each position with your foot on da brake. Then repeat this pausing in each gear for 10 secs, till you get back to park. Pop your hood, pull the dipstick out and wipe it several times with a clean rag then insert dipstick count off 10 secs and remove dipstick, holding it parallel to the groung take your reading. should be in the safe zone (reference your owner manual it will have a diagram showing your dipstick. Preferably 3/4 into the safe zone is a GooD THaNG!.......If it is still above the safe zone repeat procedure until it is within the safe zone

Add fluid if you need to but DO NOT RUN AN AUTOMATIC TRANS EITHER OVER OR UNDERFILLED. Not aGooD THaNG!...........I highly recommend changing the trans fluid frequently Intially at about 12-15,000 miles and every 18-20,000 miles there after.

Exclamation

I used "Mr Goodpump" to pump out 1 full qt of fluid from the dipstik tube. The hot level is now at the top of the "do not add" range on the white plastic (4r70w trans) Btw, Ford dealer overfilled it.

Phatty,,,that pump was about $15 and comes with 2 identical hoses each about 6' (or less?) I filed the outer, squared edge of one end of one hose (making it sort of rounded) so that it could be pushed thru the bend in the tube. The hose OD. is not much smaller than the tube ID. I pushed the hose in till I could hear it bubble when I blew thru it.,,then connected it to the pump. Its a good pump and can be opened up for cleaning. Rubin
