starting issue . just clicks
starting issue . just clicks
About a few weeks ago I have a starting issue. BAttery fine , power on , everything works and just CLICK
This is on a 2006 F150 trition engine.
After hours of pulling my hair out I banged it with a hammer (starter) and it started. Took to repair place and they said starter is fine its the battery. Original. So i replaced it and worked fine for 2 weeks.
Yesterday it started this CLICK again. Got it started and let it run for 20 mins and shut it off. but in the am failed again.
Here as some additional details:
Both times this has happened I got a car wash at an automatic car was place that sprays the underside with jets to clean off road salt (live in michigan) and it was like 20 degrees. So that leads me to believe something is getting wet and freezing!
So i get under the truck with a hair dryer and hit the starter with heat and bang on it again. and BAM - starts up...
I did notice that the coil or solenoid attached to the starter has exposed copper coil. dont know it that is suppose to be open or its a rust hole or drain cap missing. I think water is getting in there at the car wash.
basically it wont start again now. but its 18 degrees out. Waiting for it to warm or me go out with the hair dryer again and get it started and head for a repair again.
any thoughts? I asked them to replace the starter last time but they said it was working fine and beleived it was the battery.
I will try and get a picture of the exposed coil i am referring to and post

well picture didnt post. oh well. i have a picture of the opening which appears to be a plug cap or something missing on the solenoid that is allowing water in and freezing. if someone wants to see it or post it for me i can send to you.
basically - took a hair dryer and hold hot air into the opening and truck starts.
thinking its time to just replace starter and solenoid completely since water is getting in. OF course I could cover the hole with duct tape i suppose. but my feeling is that that the water is in there and going to be a issue later anyways.
