Coolant bypass filter set up.

Hello y'all,

I was wondering if anyone has attempted to make a home made coolant filter kit for the f150. My truck is a 2009 with the 5.4 in it.I think this would be great to put on trucks that have the eco boost engines since the turbos are cooled by the coolant. I have been looking in to doing one but i need a little guidance on how to do one. I have seen that all of the diesel trucks have them. I am going to do a coolant flush here soon and i wanted to do this while i was going to flush the system. I have the premium gold coolant in my truck. I was looking inside my degas bottle and there is all this nasty looking stuff in there. I know that ford has had a problem with the coolant breaking down.I know that i have to tap into one of the heater hoses and i am going to assume that i will attach the other hose to the degas bottle. But i don't know which side is the inlet for the heater core. Any help or encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Here are some pictures of my coolant bottle and the heater hoses and the connections.

Thanks,
Nicholas

Interesting....no experience in this....but aware that large trucks have coolant filters.

my 1st thought would be to put in line with either upper or lower radiator hoses, where it would get complete circulation of the coolant, certainly more volume anyway...rather then on the heater hoses, not so sure how complete the coolant circulation would be there. (intermittent or seasonal use).

Don't think I would mess with the degass tank...but, this would definitely need a bypass of some kind in-case the filter would plug, that the plugged filter wouldn't starve the the engine of cooling ability, thereby, causing more harm then good.

well that's my 2 cents....for what it's worth

if your going to install one into your heater core line just route the inlet hose going into your heater hose into the coolant filter base and the outlet of the filter base to the heater core inlet. do not install it in the upper or lower radiator hoses. the only other option you have is to find a couple of coolant ports on the engine that are plugged one on the outlet side of the water pump and route that into the filter inlet and then the outlet of the filter needs to go to the inlet side of the water pump.

you also need to find a filter that is compatible with the ford gold coolant. if you go with coolant filters from a truck make sure it does not have any additives in it. you need a blank filter (meaning no additives).

Coolant filter is used on trucks because their coolant is extended use. If you will be changing your coolant every 2-3 years, you will never need a filter. In addition, Diesels have more contaminates than gassers............But waste your time and money if you wish.
