Post Slap happy V10

Add me to the piston slap list....

I took my truck into the dealer last week for a list of minor problems. One of which was knocking on cold starts. The mechanic stated on the repair order "needs new engine, can't order till after January" Well, at least I didn't have to argue with anyone... They never did say what the problem was. Continued in Superduty section.

Thumbs down

I have been expecting this bad news since the V-10 internals are the same as the 5.4l V-8 (just 2 more cylinders - same pistons, same rods, etc)
I haven't noticed any problem with mine - but it hasn't been down to 50 degrees in so long that I can't remember when... (Maybe I should go North for the winter. )
Sorry to hear about your engine, V10 man. Perhaps they'll replace it with a 300HP engine. Good luck to you!

Question

J-C: It's funny you mention the likeness of the 5.4 vs the 6.8. I have a friend that calls the V-10 a 5.4w/2 x-tra cylinders. I haven't ever heard anyone call it that before! Oh well.....

I think it would have too. 2 extra cylinders
What are you gettting for mileage? I talked to a guy who has a 1999 F-250 long bed supercab 4x2 v-10/auto and is getting about 13 mpg on the highway.

Mileage varies with foot pressure.
Cruising empty at 55 MPH, I get 14.5 MPG
Cruising empty at 65-70 MPH, I get 13 MPG
Towing 12100 pound 5th wheel at 60 MPH, I get only 9 MPG.
I don't have good figures for in-town mileage.
Overall mileage since new is 12.2 MPG.
Not bad for a 6700# truck.
My father-in-law has yet to get 10MPG with his 1998 Surburban 454 V-8 (empty, towing or DOWNHILL )
Almost forgot - I usually leave OD turned "ON" (unless it starts shifting a lot)

That has to be the best mileage from a V-10 I've heard. Buddy of mine has a F-250 SD Crewcab shortbed V-10 Auto with a 4' Superlift Suspension lift and 35"x14.50 SSR's and he gets 9 mpg on the highway and about 5-6 in town. But he don't have any problems getting the rig to roll.....

Just getting ready to turn 27,000. I'll own it 1 year on the 2nd of November. It's been knocking for a while now. I can't really remember when it started.
