Dg511 to new style DG521 coils When exactly did these change?
Hello all,
I've been checking fitment with the DG511 and DG521 coils. I know that in 2008, there is a crossover from the old style 3v heads to the new style.
DG511 coils have black style boots while DG521 coils are exactly the same, but have brown boots that are just a hair longer.
When exactly in 2008 did this change occur? Ford/Motorcraft is showing DG511 and DG521 both fit the 2008 model year, but are not showing exact build dates, which gets confusing.
Is there a VIN number or build date that they started using the newer style heads?
Thanks in advance

The only way to tell is by looking at them. There is no VIN distinction. Of course, you could pull a plug to see if it's old style or new style, but if you do that, you will be removing the COP anyway.........
Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.
I've been doing a lot of research to find out a good way to identify. I am not 100% sure about this, but a lot of data has been consistent. Maybe some owners can chime in themselves with their own information.
The DG511 coils have a printing on them that starts with ""3L3E", "3L3Z", or "3L3U"
The DG521 coils have a printing on them that starts with "8L3E" "8L3Z". I don't know of any other numbers. I'll take a guess and the DG521s all start with an "8" while the DG511s start with a "3".
If anybody can take a look at their truck to verify this and add information for people who search in the future, that would be awesome!
Thanks guys!
