Cleaning TB Failure Today

Well today I went to tackle the throttle body and clean it since it hasn't been touched in 130,000 miles. Anyways got to it, got the 4 bolts off, and got all the hoses and stuff off, but 2 that totally stumped me and had to call it quits since it was getting late.

The first hose was the one in the very back almost against the firewall. I just couldn't get my hand back there to take it off.

And the second hose was the one that's clamped to the drivers side with a green clip. I could not figure out how those clips work for the life of me.

Anyone got any tips for when I tackle it next time?

Here is a pic with the stuff circled I couldn't get free.

the one on the right is purge hose for the EVAP system maybe?
back vacuum hose goes to the booster IIRC

Why not just take the TB itself off, why were you pulling the whole elbow out?

Also you don't even have to take the TB off to clean it, just rock the blade forward gently and scrub the blade with a rag sprayed with brake clean. Or use an old tooth brush sprayed with brake clean.

Depends what he's doing. I'd take everything off. That way you can ream the EGR ports. Specially if its a 4six.

|So Cal| - Do you have the 4six or a 5four? I think that hose at the back is the PCV line. Unless you have another that runs right into the back of the upper intake, just below that one on the elbow when everything's together.

I'm not sure you can see the booster port in that photo.

Yea that's right Patrick, that top hose is the EVAP. So Cal, -don't mess with that green elbow, you'll break the tabs that hold and seal that connection. It's almost impossible not to. Once it's broke, you'll need a new one because it won't seal. You can remove just the hose from it tho, but you'll need 90 degree pic or flat blade to separate it and some WD to manipulate. I'd just take that hose free from the TB elbow and leave it in the engine compartment.

You have to pry up on the rubber hoses a little, -so you can feed that wd40 straw into the connection. That loosens them right up.

I'm not exactly sure if I was taking the whole thing off or just the TB. I undid the 4 screws and tried to get rid of all the connections onto the TB.

I also have the 5.4. The hose with the green tab is so brittle on my truck if I do any pulling or prying on it it will surely tear. I'll have to see what I can do next time. That sure is a task getting the TB off since they pack it so far back next to the fire wall.

when I replace the "EVAP" hose on mine for the same condition as you're experiencing.
pretty sure that it is a Ford only item...yes you can get similar hoses elsewhere...but they will not stand up. Sorry I can't recall how it (the green connector) came off, like Jbrew said it prolly broke, but I was replacing it anyway.

if you can twist them a bit then they should come off...the WD-40 thing will help too.

Keep in mind, just because a fuel emission vapor hose is shedding doesn't necessarily mean its bad. They all do this and they're only bad once there isn't much left of it. They can shed/peal for quite awhile before integrity is lost. I still use my factory hose and just clean it off w/hand cleaner when servicing the TB and parts around it.

Just keep servicing as you were, it'll be fine. Just DO NOT use compressed air for the EGR or any chemical to that part if that was planned. Compressed air and chemicals will destroy the EGR valve diaphragm and other components attached to the TB and elbow.

Like I said, use WD to remove hoses. That will save you some bucks and time. Works every time.

With the 5four there will be a little carbon build up in the EGR port of the plenum. Not that bad usually for the 5.4Ls. The 4sixs will plug totally up.

What year is this? I have an '05 5.4L 3V and cleaned my TB the other day. 20 minutes from hood up to hood closed. The only part I had trouble with was the TB to intake plenum gasket. What year is your truck?

VTX, - His model year is 2001. That info is at the top right of the screen when a user posts. You probably haven't noticed that yet lol.

Yours would be as well, if you go to "UserCP" and fill the info in.

Anyway, yea, the 01 and 05 are much different.

haha yeah I'd assume an 01 and 05 are very different. Anyways I'm probably over cleaning the TB. Trying to yank on these hoses I know I'm gonna end up replacing one. I'm in the process of trying to sell the truck to downsize anyways.

Gotcha, thanks! Seems the '05 is a lot easier to work on, in this respect, than the '01.... now time for me to go change my spark plugs... don't laugh....
