chirp/squeal 2001 5.4 triton
i have a 2001 f150 with the 5.4 triton. it recently has developed a chirping sound from the time any amount of throttle is applied until the throttle is released. i replaced the belt, the tensioner, the idler pulley, the alternator, and the water pump. it stil squealed. the power steering pump looked recently replaced, so thats why i did not get one. however when i was underneath it today i found some forward and backward play on it. i have heard this is acceptable, but i am not sure i believe it. could this be the cause of my squeal? and should i get a new pump and a new pulley?
Does it do it with the belt off? If it does it is something besides belt driven components.
If not, you're only left with a/c compressor, power steering pump, or possibly, the fan clutch, as far as i know, since you've replaced about everthing else.

the truck is a non-ac, should have said that. i just took the belt off, and the noise was not present.
second question here, where can i buy a high grade tensioner? the new one is rather poor quality, where the ratchet fits in already is warping after one removal, and it holds less tension than the old one

went cheap on tensioner because it was the only local place that had a non ac part. thanks for the rock auto tip!
Right, -actually a bad idler is more common IMO. Might be due to the fact that the tensioner should ALWAYS be replaced with the belt. If it wasn't, well....
Since they haven't incorporated better bearings for these parts (they could very easily), they tend to wear out. Today, I would not only change the tensioner complete, but also change the idler when performing a serp belt swap.

Looks like you found your belt. Personally, I've never had a problem w/Gates belts.
