Ok so if I understand the posts.. I can do a direct swap up to a mid-08 5.4?

Other question is.. mustangs came with a 5.4 as well. My nephew suggested I look into getting something out of a wreck but again I'm not sure which years would be a match for the 04 f150.

Thanks for the input guys.. !

No you can swap ANY 3v 5.4 they used them up to 2010. I'm pretty sure they all are a direct swap.

This in incorrect. 2005+ mustang GT's came with a 4.6 3v from 05-10. The only 5.4 was a 4v and it was in the 2007+ GT500's

If the 5.4/4.6 needs to be rebuilt/new engine. would a 4.0 fit in it's place?

The motor on my 2004 fx4 3v 5.4 recently took a dump on me. I have called around to multiple salvages pricing a motor and they are saying only the 2004 motor will work no other years are a direct swap. I have found a 2010 3v 5.4 motor but am hesitant to purchase due to the conflicting answers. I am hoping someone can clear this up for me. Thank you!

I was wondering if any other motor besides the triton motors will bolt up to the transmission in my truck. Am just considering all the possibilities before proceeding with spending the cash on a reman 5.4.
. just needed to know what years will bolt right up to the 04 5.4 3v new style 4x4

I know this is an old thread, but I have essentially the same situation. Except I have an 06 f150 5.4. I found a good deal on a low mileage 2010 5.4 with the tranny still bolted up. Just hoping someone might have knowledge with would help, thank you!

The 2010 will have a 6 speed transmission, it's not electrically compatible. The engine should swap keeping your transmission. There will be some issues, but not serious.

The engine purchase deal which I have the opportunity to make includes the motor, ECM computer, tranny, and transfer case, all together still bolted. Would this change your conclusion about not being able to use the transmission with the swap? Do you still think there would be some issues and would the wiring harness match up? Thank you so much for take the time to reply and help me out!!

supposedly it all only has no more than 10k miles on it too... came out of a totaled, nearly new truck way back in 2010 and has just been sitting ever since.

I honestly don't know for sure, but I think there will definitely be wiring harness issues. There will be other issues being that you are crossing generations, the shift levers and mechanisms are different between the 4 speed and 6 speed, there is an additional lever position.

They are Champion and E3, both of which are garbage. The latest Motorcraft SP546 is fine, the weld is a lot stronger.
