Engine Swap Question

I have 1997 F150 4x4 with the Windsor 4.6 that needs to be rebuilt. I would just rather drop in a reman from a place in VA since it would be cheaper and have a GREAT warranty. Would it be best to get a 4.6 or a 99-01 5.4 with PI heads? The price is the same for either motor. I want the 5.4 and know that I would need a custom tune, but is that it?

No. 3v 5.4's are dramatically different.

Tune not necessary for that swap. But, you should get one. The 99 5four is a good engine. The ONLY model (97-03)that had a strong metal PI intake.

Make absolutely sure the engine you purchase is from an F150, - IF PI matters. Makes no difference to me. Now PI heads on a non PI block, - that's something!

Keep in mind, the 3/4 tons and Vans did not have PI engines for some time after 99. FYI, - The 4.6L's didn't go PI at all until 2001.

Where I bought the %.4 it was out of an f250 but he said the only thing I had to do is to change the oil pan. The oil filter is on the engine on the 03 and the motor mounts are different. On the o4 engine the oil filter is on a tube pointing down

So its a 2v engine? if so it is Swapable. Make sure the belts are the same to other then the stuff you listed its all plug and play.. in 04 they changed the f150 5.4 to 3v. Might not have got to the f250 until later. Last I heard the Vans are still using the 5.4 2v but thats all that I know of..

The F250 didn't get the 3V engine till 2005. That's the only reason the engine you bought was compatible.
