Even if you can bolt it up and run it, the tranny will not be able to convert all of the torque to the rear end without destroying itself. If you review some of the manual tranny posts, you'll see that this tranny probably isn't the strongest component on the truck. In fact I think that's why the manual isn't even available with the 5.4L Triton. Sorry.

i would assume that it would bolt up, since the auto tranny for the 4.2 and 5.4 can be the same. but like Tiger said, it may only be fun for a few thousand miles...

that said, there is a guy on here who has a supercharged 4.6 w/manual with like 30 or 40k miles, and i think his transmission is holding up (power is probably similar to the dohc 5.4); i cant remember his name, but maybe he'll show up. also, the problem with the manual seems to be the synchros, not the transmission itself. if you shifted easily i think it could physically handle the torque while in gear, but if you shift too quickly (which i think you'll already have noticed this transmission hates) you'll wear out the synchros pretty fast.

you'll definately need a better clutch, though - it will slip like crazy with that much torque going through it. but since you'll have the engine out anyway it shouldn't be too much of a pain to change.

my friend has a chevy 1/2 ton that had a 305 and 5-spd, and he dropped in a ~400 hp 350. his stock tranny lasted around 3000 miles on that (he drove it really hard all the time) and then he rebuilt it (replaced all the synchros and bearings and dog gears) and its been doing fine for around 3000 miles. when we took it apart to rebuild it all the gears and shift forks looked brand new (literally, like they were just cast - even the dog gears looked fine, but he replaced them anyway), despite having over 200,000 miles on it. after seeing that i decided that manual transmissions themselves are really strong, its just stuff like synchros and clutches and bearings that are weak.

The 4.6 and 5.4 will not bolt up to the same transmission as the 4.2. I think the 4.2 is the same bolt pattern as the 302 windsor family of engines. Regards,

I have a 5.4L32V in my truck but it was a factory swap that i orderd, it can be done but you have to get the same tranny the superduty and the lightning has, its the 100 size or something like that. and man if you get that baby in your truck your really feel the high end. ohh and one other thing make sure your rear diff is at least 3.55 ratio. hope this info is good to you
