California Fuel Fiasco

I've been wondering about all this ether thats been going into the California gas supplies. Does anybody know if this nasty stuff is damaging anything (besides our drinking water)?

I know it causes my Expy to get 4 to 5 MPG less, than when I can buy fuel out of state.

I get 2-3 Mpgs higher on Oregon Gas than California.
