Motor swap in progress - Now Complete!

02 F150. Swapping the 4.6 for a 5.4. Picked up the 03 5.4 with 60k on it from a wrecked truck. Went through it and changed seals, gaskets, timing set. Cleaned it up and painted the valve covers to match truck.

Put a new converter for the 5.4 in the tranny. Got the stainless OBX lightning Headers going on.

Mike at 5 star sent me the proper tunes on a SCT tuner. EGR delete. Downstream 02 delete.

Should have it running this weekend.

I have some pics but not sure how to get them on here...

Troy.

Lets see it. Use a photo sharing site like photobucket to upload them too. Then use the image code to post them. Or upload them into your gallery

LOL! Not sure I need a huffer on this thing even though it is a nice thought...

I created a gallery since I don't have a photobucket set up.

Here ... https://www.f150online.com/forums/me...gine+swap.html

I put up some more when I get further along.

Done

Well I finished it up Sunday. Absolutley no issues at all. Fired right up after dumping in the new 5-Star tune.

Exhaust is maybe a little louder than I would like but I can still play around with that if I need to. Gonna give it a week of 50mi round trips to work and back. Noticed a drone fronm the exhaust cruising at 1700 rpm. I thought the Magnaflows werent supposed to do that like my Flowmasters did.

The whole thing was a lot of work but it went better than I expected thanks to all the advice I read on this forum before starting the job. This place is priceless!

Nice job! Yea, sounds like you want a Borla exhaust. Great performance numbers, deeper growl without the drone. More expensive tho.

Congrats on the swap, I like the valve covers. I just finished the same swap in my 98, I am still using the 4.6 computer while I wait for my 5 star tune. The increase in power is great, mileage is even better.

Guys - I had temporary tail pipes ending at the rear axle. This evodently was the source of my drone. Had a shop bend some custom tail pipes exiting at 45deg at the rear corners. Now it sounds very good and the drone is gone. I used the Mag 12468 dual 2.5" in/out muffler with internal X.

I really like the sound now. Not too aggressive yet growls when you want it too!

61.. The valvecovers looked great on the stand... The intent was to have them match the truck. They do but you can barely see them now with all the CRAP back on the engine! Especially on the driver's side. Thanks for the compliment though...

Talking Mileage update

Guys,

I ran my first tank-full through on the 5Star 87 performance tune. Got 15 mpg and I must admit I flogged it a couple times.

The 4.6 got 16 back and forth to work so I feel this is right in line with what I should see.

I towed the boat last weekend. Didn't change the tune but Big difference anyway

I filled it up last night and dumped in the 87 economy tune. Will update here when I get a number. I'll try not to jump on it too much. I can say after the drive today, I can tell a big difference in the shifting. Much smoother than the perf tune and locks up the converter quicker. Should lead to better mileage. If I get back to 16mpg, I'll be elated!

You should be able to see 16mpg no problem. Depending on your foot of coarse. But a good easy highway drive should net you 16+

I think your foot is not allowing you to achieve better mileage. I know mine wouldnt. Not with a fresh 4.6 to 5.4 swap along with headers and exhaust. Pretty sure Id be testing out the power of the 5.4 and listening to that exhaust all day. Give it some time... settle into it, it will come around.

Well I finished with the 2nd tank. Got 16.2 MPG. Woohoo! Yep it was my foot...

Screw this... I can't drive like Grandma anymore.... I'll settle for 15!

"Scotty... I need more power!"

Going back to the performance tune!

Troy.
