Post Detonation

I was experiencing mild detonation (5.4, 3.55 LSD, 46K miles, 87 octane, airbox mod) and decided to reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery for a half hour. Two things happened after that: (1) indicated mileage increased from the high 14's to the mid-18's, and (2) the detonation went nearly away. My questions are: does the ECU recognize fuel octane, and would my knock sensor be the cause for the detonation? Thank you.
