Hi Kkirt1,

So did the exchange engine end up being an FQR (or rebuilt), or was it one of the new engines off the line? And how many of your old engine parts had to be moved to the new engine (in other words, how complete was the new motor?).

Also, if you have other info you would like to share off line, you can e-mail that to me at darcpa@worldnet.att.net

Thanks,

DirkR

P.S. This is the first post where I am a "member." Cool.

Post More FQR experience!

Okay, I couldn't help myself. Yesterday I was helping someone move and a friend of mine and I were driving back from dropping off a load. He has a '98 xc 4x4 4.6l.

Before, don't ask me why, he would always stay right up with me. It was like we both had the same engine. The only thing that is different is that he has the stock tires. That changes the gearing a little but... would that allow a 4.6 to stay right with a 5.4?

Well, with the new motor in I pulled from him both times. Man was he pissed! Oh well, it's about time he saw what the 5.4 can do. The new motor runs great!

As a side note though. I heard a squeaking noise from the engine everytime I gave it gas. Typical belt squeak! It took $38 and two helpers (one to pull the belt over the top pulley, another to hold the tensioner and me underneath trying to gain that 1/8 inch we needed.) What a pain! I would suggest that if anyone else gets there motor replaced and have anything over 50K miles to spring for a new belt.

Hey kkirt1, to answer your question from the previous FQR topic, I'm pretty sure a short block assembly consists of just the crankshaft, rods, pistons, and timing chain or belt. But, like you said, they can't install the belt without installing the heads, which then would classify it as a long block assembly. Is it true that the '99 heads have the larger valves, which makes up the performance gain from '98 to '99?

Dirkr: I think the FQR and rebuilt is one-in-the-same. The service manager said he didn't know but my guess is that it has some reused components, hence the term FQR (Ford Quality Replacement.) How many? I'm not sure.

It did come with the everything from the oil pan to the heads. No intake, fuel injectors or coil packs but it did have a new water pump.

I just filled up for the first time last night. I didn't calculate it but I think I am getting a little better mileage. The better MPG could be because I have been keeping my foot out of it. Another 500 miles and that will change

Good luck with your replacement!

Thumbs up

Engine Exchange Update:

My truck goes in for the engine exchange on Tuesday (10/5). Once the engine was ordered, it took two days to arrive. It is an FQR engine that will use my intake and exhaust manifold, etc. My service writer said he will need my truck for two days.

More to come when the exchange is complete.

Keep us posted Indy...

Dirk
