Question 5.4L performance rebuild advice

Hey guys! I know that these kinds of questions have been posted once or twice... But I just can't seem to find the info that I'm looking for... It seems as though the 2v 5.4l is one of the best kept secrets on the interwebs. At least in the truck world...

I picked up a 5.4l a couple of weeks ago, turns out it is non-PI. I'm planning on a performance rebuild. And what I really need is some help planning this thing out. This is what I have so far...

From the bottom up: I have stripped all components from the block to take it to an engine rebuilder in town, here. I'm going to get them to clean the block up to look good as new, do a thorough inspection of the bores, journels, etc. I'd like to bore the cylinders out 0.020" over... Reuse the factory crank, Manley H-Beam rods, Manley pistons, I'd like to use flat top pistons to increase the CR, but I'm not sure how high I can take it, or if I even should try to bump it up... Maybe a slight dish, say... 11cc? Either one should put me above 10:1 ish.

Top end: I'm very heavily considering Trick Flow heads for this, the TFS-51900002-M44 to be specific. With a 44cc chamber, 185cc Intake runner volume and 93cc exhaust. They claim that their cast heads are "as good as" ported heads so I'm wondering if porting them would be worth it? Medium cam, "Excellent Torque, Better Low & Mid-Range Torque w/ Power" (CompCams XE270AH). Stock PI intake. BBK 75mm throttle body.

What other upgrades would I need?(pumps, pullies, ugh... Whatever else) I'd like to have the ability to add a supercharger down the road...

I'm in no rush, I'm planning on at minimum 1 year for this build, and as for a budget, lets say... I haven't really set one yet... $10,000ish?(before sc).

Am I on track or WAY out in left field somewhere?

For cams, I would highly recommend Iskenderian, Crower, Lunati or Herbert- they have been grinding cams longer than most & really enjoy/appreciate speaking with customers directly by phone.

i would not run a high compression motor if you want to run boost later on.

I hear that... Then again, this is a forum... All should be taken with a grain of salt...

But hey, if you can sift through the bs, there is a lot of good info to be had...

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to look into them!

Another quick question, with regards to the EGR. If I delete it, how much will it affect performance, if at all?

I deleted mine when I did my L swap. Most guys do it to make plug changes easier. It doesn't affect performance really. Mostly emissions.

I found a tech article on Summit Racing about sizing injectors... With the formula that they give, I come up with about 31lbs/hr... Now, I'm not sure if that's a bit high or not... If I get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, I'd be able to dial back or "de-rate" them if they prove to be too high... Is this an accurate understanding? Enlightenment please!

Since were on the topic of 5.4 performance, one swap I've always wondered about is, why not the 5.4 navigator heads , or atleast I was told they were navigator heads. Aren't they DOHC or 4v motors Im not sure how you'd ever program for them but would they be a performance gain from porting without having to go aftermarket. Sorry I was just inquiring as I don't have a 10k budget...I wish

Good luck with your build

I believe its the 01 navigator head in particular, and as best I can tell online they are 4v DOHC heads but not sure of the compatible with the Windsor style intake or if you would would be required to use the navi intake or with a 10k budget I'd go sheetmetal especially with boost on the horizon. And definitely ditch high compression with boost. DOHC 4v heads ported heavily may be the ticked for a boosted 5.4 unless its off road then I'd be afraid of the loss in bottom end.

Any one ever see a stroker crank for these beasts or is that a custom job.

Good luck with your build
