Old man needs help

Truck's been running great (and still does) but dies a slow death at idle. The other day everything was doing great. Stopped at traffic light and engine slowly lost rpm and died. Start-up / die, start-up die, start up, keep rpm at 1000 or so and put in gear runs fine. Got home, raised hood and a hose had fallen off and laying on intake manifold.

There are two male nipples vertical of each other on the air intake between the air filter and where it connects to the TB. The nipples are directly above the valve cover on the driver side that hoses connect too. The bottom hose connects to the driver side valve cover. The top hose is the one that had fallen off.

It is a piece of 5/8 or 3/4 ID rubber hose connecting to a factory pre-formed piece of plastic, more short hose then a factory canister about 3" long and 2 1/2" in diameter, which has a male nipples on each end with barbs to secure a hose.

Problem, can't find the other/missing hose nor where it goes. Help and old man out please. 1100 miles from home and no one to turn too.

Before anyone can help, they need to know the engine and year.

I'm guessin' 1997-2003 from the mess of hoses mentioned. But the specific year/engine is still needed as they changed some year-year.

I'll page The MAN for you - he has the hose routing diagrams -

Good luck!

'99 f250 Super Duty 2wd with 5.4. I connected the hose that fell off back to the 4" tube that runs from the air filter to the TB but can't find a hose to hook on to the open end of the canister.

Tried plugging off the opening to the air tube but that didn't help; still won't idle without keep foot on the gas and rpm up to around 1000.

2003 4.6, but should be similar, the bottom hose goes down to PCV valve on drivers valve cover, and upper hose goes back through the black box into the IAC

Well, you need that top hose from end to end and everything in between, or she's not going to idle. That's because that hose connects to your IdleAirController (IAC). The cylinder in the center is a baffle/muffler restrictor aperuhhrrastus.

You might be able to heater hose that piece, -just get heavy stuff or she'll suck shut on yuh.. Hate it when that happens uknow...

No black box on the 5.4L. All it is = A little rubber HH boot stub over plastic barb. Connects to a plastic pre-bent hard-line routing from close to the intake/TB boot back to the canister (restrictor/baffle deal) Then just one more piece form the canister to the IAC connector.

Guess I need a pick or something, - since I'm not sure I understyand what I just wrote.

Hang on, I'll get one. -Someones at the damn door, - BYB.

Chicken dinner.

How did they just fall off is what I am wondering. But yea, get that guy hooked back up to the IAC and your idle will come back.

jbrew,

Thanks for your help and pictures; I assume from the shape of the breather tube the butterfly of the throttle body would be pointing toward the driver side headlight? If so, the hose attachés to the passenger side rear of the TB; correct?

I'll feel around and try to find where it attachés to the throttle body. Is there be a male nipple sticking out if the hose that goes to the canister is missing?

70 years old and not much of a mechanic; quit working on 'em when they did away with the flat head and 8n tractor. :-)

Toyz,

Rough **** roads in Louisiana; worst in the nation. My guess; just hit one to many humps, bumps or holes in the road. All I know is it was running great and when I stopped at a traffic light it died. Got to the house, raised the hood and saw the short hose, plastic pipe and canister laying on top the driverside valve cover.

jbrew,

Thanks again for all your help. Located the nipple sticking out the back of the IAC. Now to get a hose to fix it and being able to get my hand in there is another story but maybe I can find me some limber young'n. If not den taking the front end off and pulling da engine is an option I guess. :-D

Thanks again for helpin' dis 'Ol Coonass out.... Laissez les bon temps rouller
