Angry 1998 F150 4.6 Lariat Engine problems

Sputters, hesitates when goosed a little bit. When cruise is on and go up any size hill, engine will even back fire.. Any suggestions? On Ebay there are COIL PACKS for sale:

Ford Lincoln Mercury Pickup Truck 4.6L 5.0L V8 Ignition Coil Pack Pair Set

Plus this one: NEW IGNITION COIL PACK **FITS 4.6L 4.0L V8 & 2.0L 4cyl

Listed under coil pack 4.6

In your expert opinion, is this what I am needing? I have lost all track of Ford stuff since they quit making the old Flat head V-8s.. Bill

How many miles? Maintenance? check engine light? Misfire would be suspect. But could be other things as well.

What brand plugs and wires are on it, and how old are they?

What glc said. Any codes? Whens the last time plugs and wires changed? Mine was doing the same thing and I have a 97 4.6L. The problem was the plug cylinder 8 needed changed. I don't think they had ever been changed. The gap was close to double what it should be. You may need to change your plugs and wires. 28 ft/lb torque, make sure the engine has cooled before changing them due to aluminum engine.

In all honesty I would start with just a set of wires.

Mine was running bad (but with a code) and I just replaced one wire and it cleared it right up.

I paid 200$ for a set from ford. They probably need to be replaced anyway.

Good luck and keep us up to date.

They sure saw you coming. The same Motorcraft wires are $60 at rockauto.com.

The Ford modulars often don't like ANYTHING but Motorcraft parts. I can't explain it, have no idea why. A guy I worked with quite a few years ago had a 95 T-bird. He put a lot of miles on a car. Put a set of aftermarket wires on it and still had some problems. Then a mechanic told him to use only MC. He did and still had some problems. Mechanic asked him if he routed 'em exactly as they were originally routed. He hadn't been that careful so went back and made sure routing was exactly as original (he bought the car new). Problem solved! That was my 1st look at how fussy the modulars could be. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. It did have very specific routing channels for the SP wires.

^^ Not to derail the thread, but I believe your routing issue. The firing of cyl's 5 and 6 simultaneously can cause inductive cross firing when the wires are routed in parallel. (coil packs)

Ya I guess they did. I had a bad misfire and need to fix it so I could get to work though- didn't have the time to shop around and/ or wait for shipping.

I am actually going to try ordering from rock auto this summer for some maintenance parts, when I don't need them right away. But being in Canada by the time I pay duty and tax I still don't save too much. Some people I know have to pay duty others don't.....

Thanks for the suggestion though

OP: did you figure it out?

I have a friend in Canada who has saved a considerable amount by ordering stuff from Rock. It depends on the item.

Ya, they have the best prices I have seen. The only thing is I don't know what items I would have to pay duty for or not. Could you ask you're friend what he had to pay it on and how long ago and pm me? I know 2 people who have ordered from them, one got charged (about 5 months ago) and the other one didn't (but that was over a year ago and we don't talk any more) last I knew they never made other orders
