I've got a 1987 F150, 6 cyl, with 67000 original miles. The engine light comes on when I'm slowing down coming to a stop. Once I stop or if I accelerate again, the engine light goes off. All of the gauges are fine. Any ideas?

 

Just an FYI

I hope its not the engine light coming on( RED light on dash)

Engine light (RED)=bad things are happing in engine--do's it make a noise(knock)

I hope it is just a check engine light(yellow or amber light on dash)

Check Engine Light(YELLOW or AMBER)=basicly an emissions light(EGR valve-vacum hose unpluged-engine miss)

Sounds a lot like the problem we are having with dads 94 F150 with a 302. Hooked a code reader to it. It turns out to be a thottle position sensor. His truck would act up after about 5 minutes of driving (length of my road) and then when you would go to turn out on to the next road the light would come on and the truck did not shift right and acted sluggish. Going to pick up a TPS and see if that helps sense that is what the code reader stated.

 

Yep, it's the red engine light, not much if anything about what to check in my shop manual either.

 

If it's the "Red" Check engine light, you could have a number of things wrong. Might want to check oil pressure with real pressure gauge, to make sure oil pump isn't taking a crap, or check the oil fill level. If you are a 1.5 or more low when you come to a stop the oil runs to the front of the pan a causes it to trip the light.
