Question Towing Group question...

I noticed on the 5.4L trucks, they have a towing capacity upwards of 8,000 lbs. However, the towing group only includes a Class III hitch, rated at 6,000 lbs. What's the deal here? Is it better to add a Class IV hitch later? I know the Rams come with a Class IV hitch....

Also, what's the difference between the H.D. shocks in the tow group and the H.D. shocks in the ORP? Or are we paying for these twice if we get a truck with ORP + tow?

Cool

I can't answer your first question, but when I ordered my truck with "overlapping" option packages, I was only charged for the portion of the packages that didn't overlap.
You won't be paying twice
I think the only difference in the shocks are that the ORP shocks are longer.
Good luck!

FordLover, do you or are you getting the 5.4L with the tow package? its rated for 8500# and I don't know how you got your rating info, but a class 3 hitch is what you want for pulling a weight over 5000#s.
I have one now(97) and getting same (00), transmission, engine cooler and bigger radiator, forget what the package #is, but check out your info, it's all in the Ford magazines at the dealers.
That 5.4 with the trailer package will pull a house over...
I am talking about a 4X2, just think what a 4X4 would do???

Dogcam,

The hitch itself states that maximum towing capacity is 6000lbs. It seems like a 7000lb. trailer would not be safe for this hitch, although the truck is capable of towing it.

I believe that the weight ratings on the hitches are dead weight. If you use a weight distributing hitch it doubles the capacity. 500/5,000 would be 1,000/10,000.

Also, a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
I saw two identical 2" *****. One was rated 6000lbs the other 3500lbs. The only difference was the threaded shaft. One was 1" the other 3/4".

Same size ***** .. different size shafts .. different ratings .. The smaller the shaft the lower the rating, size does count.

Raoul,
Are you alright?

These last three posts hit me as being entered with the wrong names or something.

Take care,
Mark

My truck is rated to tow 8300 lbs. Max tongue weight is 500 lbs and 800 with a weight distribution system.

Just being a nice setup man.
Like a pitcher during the homerun derby at the All Star game, serving up meatballs so these wanna-be Mark Mcguire's can hit some out.
