Need help with P0605 ...

I'm hoping that I could some help with my 2006 F-150 w/5.4 Flex. I bought the truck two years ago w/~80k miles and now have 106k. I've kept up maintenance on my own which hasn't been much more than oil/air/fuel filters, tires, brakes and one friggn nasty plug change. So the other day I get a CEL and used my code reader and get P0605; I cleared it but it came back again the next day. My truck seems normal and this is the only issue I've experienced.

Most of the posts about this state that this is due to a tuner chip, which I doubt I have installed. The previous owner was an older guy who trades trucks every four years and the truck is neither fast or good on gas so if it does have a chip .... it sux.

I called the dealer and they want $110 to diagnose and if it is bad then $800 for part + labor charges. My questions are this: Will resetting the PCM possibly fix this? Could a re-flash fix this and lastly can I replace this myself w/o dealer involvement? Thanks for the help ... just got wife's vehicle back from shop after $850 of service and could use a little break.

You may be looking at a PCM replacement. If it's running okay I'd probably live with it until you have to pass an emission test or it starts to run bad.

You could try resetting it by disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes or so.

Thanks for the fast response! I thought these things supposedly rarely went bad ... I'm anything but rare. I will reset it this weekend just for chits and grins. So now I'm wondering if there is a decent place online to buy a replacement and do I need to take it to the dealer after I put in a new one?

If you install the PCM at your house, you will need to have it towed to the dealer because it won't be permitted to start.

Just to let folks know, they reflashed my PCM and apparently all is well. The service mgr told me that it could be my code reader that caused the error which means I may still have an issue (the reason I used the reader in the first place). So we'll see if another code shows up and I wont risk using my reader again. It is a cheap CAN ODB2 reader (~$40) that is about 6 years old ... I didn't think it was likely to be the problem but I'd rather not spend another $150 finding out.
