04 5.4 spitting and sputtering
04 5.4 spitting and sputtering
The other day while driving i decided to step on it when i did it sputtered for a few seconds then cleared up. I hooked up a scanner and there is no codes. Also every once in awhile i will fell a bucking when cruising. Things i have done to the truck are K&N CAI Shorty headers rear cat delete into a magnapack to y pipe. I was talking to a dunno tuning company and they said it was because if the cat delete. Any ideas?
Unless you have a custom tune, very likely you are running lean due to the CAI on a 2004 5.4. If so, you may have eaten the plugs. How long since the plugs have been changed?

If it's been running lean, you need to replace the plugs. I would also clean the MAF and the throttle body.
Also, what brand of plug are you running? If anything but Motorcraft, you probably need to change them even if it had not been running lean.

Hey guys i just left the shop with a burnt up plug. My truck was spitting and shuttering bad just like yours. I have a edge evolution tuner what settings do i need to adjust for the gott intake mod? I like the mod and how it improves throttle response but i can't change plugs out this often. any help would be great. And 04f150xlt you will either have to take it to a shop so they can run a full spectrum scan on your truck or take all the plugs out and see which one is burnt up. Is your truck idling rough like mine? i will add a picture of my plug later this evening so you can see what running lean does to your plugs.

The OEM software system is designed to adjust the fuel mixture up to 10%.......that’s more than enough to handle fuel mixture adjustments up to 7,000 foot elevation change! (for high elevations 8,000+ there are oem software programs for those specific applications) The 5.4 V8 for example if close to stock can only suck in a maximum of 480 cfm and a flat panel filter will flow 500 cfm, there is simply no way any CAI on a relatively stock engine can increase the air flow enough to exceed the ECM’s ability to adjust and maintain the correct fuel mixture. The only reason for the “custom” program to support the CAI is because the design is poor resulting in false readings from the air intake sensors, etc….period! They are not designed to and do not run lean. Loss of the 1 cat, the ECM doesn't care if its there or not as far as A/F ratio goes....it just gets the readings from the O2 sensors
Ford/GM/Dodge all have “watch-out” bulletins where the oil has contaminated intake sensors. - they even have a training video for the techs on this (flatratetech.com) .
So, IMHO, do the basics....
Spark plugs
wires
Throttle body clean
TPS contaminated
IAC dirty or lazy
vacume leak
