Angry Engine Running Sluggish

My 97 F150, 4x4, 4.6L, automatic doesn't have the power it use to have. I changed plugs and filters and regained some power, but not what it used to be. The oil has been changed every 4k-4.5k miles. Is there something else I can do, or can this be expected at 84k miles?

97 with a 4.9L? Do you mean the 4.6 or 4.2?

Question

Have you ever replaced your oxygen sensor? If it has never been replaced, it's time. Oxygen sensors tell the engine if it is too lean or too rich, so that it can maintain a correct fuel-air ratio. If the sensor is bad, the engine may run lean or rich, which results in loss of power.

XL175: Will an O2 sensor affect an engine like that without triggering a check engine light? Also, how hard are they to replace and what should I expect to pay? Thanks.

Kkirt1,

An O2 sensor costs between $23.95 and $52.95 in JC Whitney.

If one totally quit, it would probably trigger the check engine light.
