How to get more torque?

Hey guys I wasn't sure where to put this but I figured this is the best place. Mods if you want to move it that's fine.

I have a 2004 nbs f150 140k miles with 6" bds lift. I'm going to be moving back home to louisiana from missouri in a couple months, and I want more torque to pull my trailer. Right now I have an edge with canned tunes and a flowmaster exhaust, everything else is pretty much stock.

I'm thinking I want to add LT headers, but not sure what brand to go with, high flow cats, and 4.56 gears possibly just in the rear right now (I know not to use 4x4). I would like to get a tow tune, but I don't think I would receive it in time.

What else can I do to add some more torque, and possible HP? What brand LT headers are good yet won't break the bank? Thanks for the help.

Btw, I do know gears are not going to add torque, but they will help with towing. Also, I was looking at adding e-fans. I'm good at mechanical work but I'm inexperienced when it comes to electrical work. Are e-fans worth the price, and is the install pretty straight forward? Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for the help!

Gearing makes an incredible difference. By adding leverage, you increase torque to the rear wheels.

What size tires are you running? That will determine how you should gear it. 4.56 is quite extreme in most cases.

I'd assume 35's since he has a 6" lift.

If you have plans to go with larger tires and tow often even after the move i'd suggest 4.88's. If you are sticking to 35's go with 4.56 like you said.

You can have a tune with in a week depending on who you go with. For the 5.4 i'd suggest VMP so you make sure you have it before the move. Troyer is good as well but the wait time is ALOT longer.

If it was me, I'd go with 4.56's and a tune and call it done. LT's, while they will add HP, are going to be more expensive and not net nearly the improvements that gears and a tune will and be close to the same price after installation.

My tires are 36x13.5 super swampers right now. I think when the move comes I might look for some used 33s to throw on it for the trip, just because I really don't like towing 5 miles let alone 1000 with my bias ply. There is a CHANCE I could go to 37s at some point, but I still don't think my truck is horrible with 3.73. I think 4.56 is about as low a gear as I want to go. I already have an edge, so if I got a custom I'd probably go through php. I heard their wait times can get pretty long. Especially since I would still have to send my edge in to get it changed to a gryphon. I guess I could always sell it and get a cs? Has anyone got a tune recently from them? How long is the wait?

I just got my tunes for my Monochrome Gryphon and it took 25 days to get them. I'm more than happy with the 87 Performance Tune, haven't tried the 87 Towing Tune yet.

Thats good to hear that the wait isn't too long. 25 days would be before the move. anyone have experience with e-fans? I've heard conflicting stories with them. Some say don't do it if you tow a lot.

With 36" tires and 3.73 gears, you'd need roughly a 4.19:1 ratio to return to factory gearing. With that said, I'd go with either 4.10 or 4.30 gears. If you know that you'll be going to smaller tires in the future, I'd go with 4.10.

Go with 4.56 both axels at the same time .....if you get around 37-38 tire size then it will be 4.88...

4.30 won't work with 4wd. I don't think 4.10 is tall enough for what I want to do, and I think 4.88 will be too tall as 80% of my driving is not pulling anything. Even if I do go up a size in tires I think 4.56 will accomplish what I want.

EsJayEs- I am only going to a smaller tire for the trip. Once I get there I will put my 36 back on.

88racing- why do you say to put 4.56 in at the same time? Do you think that will be cheaper in the long run?

Just regear both at the same time is what he's saying. Cheaper, eh depends on the shop. They might cut you a slightly better deal for doing all the work at once, can't hurt to ask.
