Average about 14 city / 18 highway. The rear end is 3.55:1.

Lead foot? Before long, I'll have to repair the hole in the firewall from the gas pedal hitting it all the time!

GEARS,
You didn't mention whether you were opting for a Super Cab, 4x4 or both. It's important to compare apples to apples. HP was the most important consideration in my choice. No four wheeling or hauling around freeloaders. I believe I'm getting 4.6 mpg numbers in my 5.4.
17.5 average and 19.4 on the one long trip so far.

My two week old 99 4.6 S/C is a gas miser.
on three tanks of regular (Sunoco) fuel I have managed 19 mpg driving 70%city/30% hwy. I don't drive hard, but keep up to and pass most traffic.
Is it true that my mileage may increase as the engine breaks in?

Thumbs up

I'm getting about 14mpg around town, short tripas w/air on most of the time (It's very hot it SC)
I went to NC about 3 weeks ago and got 18mpg on the interstate donig 75-80mph w/air.
My gas mileage would improve if I removed some lead from right foot.
Love new horsepower!
If you want performance, 5.4L is the only way to go.
Very noticeable power increase at low rpm
Doesn't downshift as much due to much higher torque.
Any Full size will suck down the gas.
After driving my Nissan for 106,000 miles it took a while to adjust to putting twice as much gas in my new Ford.
I don't mind I LOVE my 5.4L XLT
Just think, spend the extra money now on the 5.4 and you will save by not doing as many mods.
By time you superchip the 4.6L and pay an extra 20cents a gallon for premuim gas you could have paid for the extra gas the 5.4L uses.
If you are getting supercab definitly get 5.4L.

Memphis ARCS50 component speakers (excellent sound)
Sherwood amp
subwoofer coming soon
More mods as funds become avalible.

I have 16000 on my 98 4.6 I tow a boat every weekend to lake Texoma (North Isl. party goer) I also tow a 3000lb tractor once a month 110 miles round trip and tow cattle to market every week (2000lbs) I get 18mpg non tow 10mpg whatever I tow and I am always in a big rush to get wherever I go. With a superchip there is no problem just keep the overdrive off unless your crusing on the highway. So unless your going for a long bed super cab I would reccomend the 4.6.

I have 3.73 gears, 5.4, 4X4 ORP, SC, with a tonneau cover (which really helps on the highway mpg) and so far, with 2660 miles, I am averaging 16.4 mpg mostly highway. I've added a K&N air filter, and soon the superchip, and I'm working on the Catbac exhaust sales pitch to the wife, I expect to be soon getting 20 mpg on the highway and I can honestly say that out of the 2660 miles, at least 2000 are with the AC on.

How fast do you drive ? I'm on the highway 80 miles/day 5 days/week and can't get over 15 MPG. I average around 70-75 mph. I just put a catback exhaust on..first tank was 13.6 MPG; but I must admit I've been "testing" the exhaust

GEARS

First of all, 1 mile from the dealer the last thing on your mind will be gas mileage.
It'l be the woody you get when you hammer the throttle!!!
Eight months and I still love squeaking the slabs.

Seriously, Chip it, Air box it, then drive it and you notice that grin on your face is worth at least an extra 5 MPG.
