The 03 would be a nice choice, best of the 2 valve. The heads are better (more threads for spark plugs), the accessory drive belt is skinnier and it uses the NVH block. Like jbrew said no major differences.

Yes it is an easy swap. The heads MIGHT have more thread if the build date is before march of 03 it probably has 4 thread heads. I've done this swap. you have to change all your pullys the oil filter relocation stuff swap on the better metal 99 intake and your done.

Why change pulleys? Unless you want the wider belt, or the new engine wasn't complete missing it's pulleys. Not trying to be smart, but the defference in pulleys is not diameter, but differences in ribs width there o.p. Just making sure you keep that in mind. Otherwise it's straight forward swapping. This is the info from one f-150 to another. If it's a 5.4 out of a E/F 250/350, the intake and some other stuff are differenton the top end. That being the case you'd swap your old stuff no prob.

Thanks everyone. Now what is the deal with 2 identical 5.4s but they say they have a different 8th digit in the VIN number. Like mine is "L". will one not work in the other?

Then they wouldn't be identical. Vin "L" is what your after for a direct swap. Vin 3 would be a lightning block more less.

I believe vin "A" is a DOHC set up or LB.

Clarify your swapping a 5.4 2v for a 5.4 2v right? thats not the same thing as this thread. You have to exchange the oil filter stuff the one from the 97 needs to be on the new engine. You'll have some other minor issues like the belt pulleys might have to be changed.
Your situation is not the same as this thread. The 3v engine didn't come out until 04..

Its not a 3 valve. The motor is out of a 03 expedition and going into a 97 f150. I think I already figured out all my filter housing situation. I have to use the 03's filter housing to the front of the motor and I have to buy a new driver side motor mount for a non oil cooled truck

Similar question

Does anyone know if I can take the motor out of my 97 4.6 f150 and put it into a 05 4.6 expedition easily? (as easy as an engine swap can be anyway) will it bolt up to the trans and everythin in the expedition?
