Post This piston slapping thing has got me a little worried.

I'm new this board and I've been reading a lot of posts about the 97+ F-150's having a piston slapping problem. I haven't noticed my 98 F-150 doing that but it bothers me that it might do it in the future after my warranty expires which is in 9000 miles. Is this limited to engines made at a certain plant or is it a engineering design flaw with all the engines? I'm beginning to question if I should just go trade it off because I've had my fill of defective vehicles from GM and Chrysler. By the way my truck has a 4.6L with a auto trans with 27,000 miles. The only complaint I have about it is the engine seems a little too weak but afterall it is a truck and not a race car.

JDVern, The piston slap issue only relates to 5.4 engines.

JD: are you saying you bought your truck new and have put 27k on it and haven't had any problems??? If so then I'd say keep the truck and enjoy it. I not had a piston-slap problem w/my truck either and I now have 45k. Now about the 4.6 being to wimpy, just add a Superchip It really improves the performance and gives it a lot of HP and torque.

Tina. How much are the superchips? I've wondered if they will void the warranty.

Darin: the piston slap is NOT limited to the 5.4. i won an arbitration against ford ib april for piston slap in my ex-1998 4.6L f150 xlt. this is NOT a minor problem and i would recommend anyone experiencing piston slap to ftl for arbitration. that is, if your waranty is bot expired. very important: go back about a year into the archives on this board and learn more about this issue.

JD: The superchips are $265 but by being a member here (you are) you get a discount. Go into the Computer Chips thread and look up How to order you Superchip. About warrenty, no it isn't voided. There has been a LOT of discussion here about that. Read all of it in the Computer Chips thread. And if you still have questions, e-mail Mike Troyer (superchips distributor) which you will also find there.
