Question When to switch to synthetic

I'm new to this message board so I apologize if this has been discussed before. I've seen lot's of info on what type of synthetic to use and change intervals. However, I haven't found much info on WHEN it's okay to make the switch to synthetic motor oil. I've heard that the rings must be allowed to seat first (break-in), but I've also heard that on modern vehicles, this is not an issue. Can anyone give me some advice. I just bought a '99 XLT with a 4.6 V8. I'd like to run synthetic, but I'm not sure when I should start. Thanks for the help!

I switched @ 6,000 miles -- with my second oil change.

Good luck,

Jim

MJ, Some new vehicles come from the factory with synthetic motor oil, I went with Mobil1 after my first oil change at 3,000 miles. I look at it this way....even if it is okay to use synthetic right off the start, I feel better knowing that my engine was broken in properly.
