please help idnetify this engine
hello, i hope anyone can give me some good advice on this.
i just bought a 1979 ford F150 coustom SWB pickup. I love this old truck and have started a restoration project, but i am not very knowledgable on the engine parts.
anyway here is the problem. according to the vin (i looked it up) this is not the original engine for this truck. it is a small block V-8. i talked to several mechinich about identifing the size eg. 320 or 351 or what ever. three have given me differert sizes. according to my haynes repair manual i have several different choices 320, 360,390, or 460 plus 351W or 351M. how do i tell?? one mechanic said that their were some numbers stamped on the engine but i havn't found them yet to be honest i don't know where to look. plz help

You can write off the 360 or 390. The last year they were used was 1976. The 460 is a possibility but unlikely in a F150 shortbed. The 351W is unlikely also as Ford used mostly 351M (a totaly different engine) in pickup trucks. Most likely, you have a 302 or 351M. There should be a sticker on the valve cover of the engine giving emission info and the engine displacement. If you have a 302 then thats all you need to know. If you have a 351 and want to verify its a 351M, compare the width of the intake manifold to a known 351W. The 351M is a wider engine. Hope this helps.

Sorry, I missed the part in your post about it not being the original engine. If you know for sure its a smallblock V8, then its either a 302 or 351W. The 351W has a wider intake manifold than the 302. The valve covers are the same size though. If you can find someone with a 302 in there car, compare it to your engine and you will know. For a good reference book, you might want to find a book called "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Ford". Its very informative and also has a parts Id section.
