Cam Timing Assembly Components

Hi--

I've got a 2005 F-150 4x4 with a 4.6 L engine that has 31,240 miles on it. Recently started hearing a loud noise out of the engine. It's not a clicking or tapping, it's more like a clacking (loud) on start-up (whether hot or cold) which continues through all operating ranges. Took it to the dealership and service writer said it was probably a cam phaser but no disassembly has taken place yet to confirm.
I'm out of warranty (on time, not miles--3 yrs, 36K miles). Was reading the warranty manual and noticed a page that said that this engine was had a warranty on "Cam Timing Assembly" that was for 7 years or 70K miles.
My question is....What are the Cam Timing Assembly components? If the phasers were part of this it would obviously save me a lot of money on what I understand to be a very high priced repair.
Thanks for any help!

The 4.6 2v does not have cam phasers......

It could be a leaking oring in the chain tensioner.......

Thanks for your reply 88Racing. I'm not a car guy so excuse me if this a stupid question---how do you know that this engine is a 2 V? Is it because that's all they put in 2005 F-150's? If that's the case I'd be happy because from what I've read the cam phasers are a big headache

PS. A friend looked up 2005 F-150 with a W VIN in his Alldata and all it talked about was 3 valve and cam phasers. I'm confused.
Thanks for any enlightenment.

4.6 3v weren't available in the f150's until 09+10 then in 11 a different power train line up was available.......there's also some 4.6 2v in the 09+10.....

rmbates...I am having the same issue as you. A loud knock at start, drive, ect. I have decided to rebuild mine over the next few months and put in performance cams, lash adjusters,New timing chains and adjusters and a few other parts. I wish you all the best on finding your source to your noise. Word of Advice with this 4.6L 2V V8 SOHC repairs are not as hard as the Ford House Leads you to think, Yes it is hard, and cost a butt load of cash (sometimes) but with a little reading and asking lots of questions even a None Mechanic can fix most of there own problems.
