Blend or Full Synthetic
Blend or Full Synthetic
I have 2010 F150 (5.4l) with 14,000 miles- I use MC 5W20 semi syntheic.
I live in Phhoenix AZand I expect to drive this truck 300,000 miles before I my body suffers a terminal mechanical malfunction. (I am 64)
I am not convinced that Mobil 1 will make my engine last any longer than the MC semi systhetic.
Recommendations?
Are there any published studies on engine life of full syn VS semi VS petroleum motor oils?
Thanks

LOTS of studies out there addressing the exact question you ask. But, frankly, I doubt you'd have a clue what the studies say even if you read them. To sum it up for you, if down time means money out of your pocket for an oil change, the extended changes are a dandy tool to incorporate into your maintenance program. If that's not the case for you, it can get costly and must be monitored closely, especially if the unit is not seeing lots of hours on each heat cycle. Wear and sludge can be an issue for the low mileage units. The blends turn in the lowest wear metals and can be trended via analysis for the most optimum time for changes. If you drive in town mostly, that's probably going to be 5-6,000 miles on a blend. Mostly hiway driving and even El Cheapo oil wearing Fords specs can easily go 7500 miles. Oils with (nano)borates and moly are showing more fuel mileage and better oil life. Most quality blends have these in the mix. Pick one and enjoy the ride.
