update

Well they pulled the head off for the #8 cylinder. They found that the exhaust valve was mushroomed and was being sucked into the head. They said the cylinder and the piston looked fine....no damage. They plan on replacing the head on that side of the engine with a new one. My question is could there be any more damage to the engine after driving it for 1,000mi in this condition?
Do you think replacing the head is ok or should I push for a new engine?
