Thinking of using an impact gun for plugs ...

Question for those that have experience with the impact gun method: I have a Makita 18v Lithium ion cordless impact gun and I also have a larger air tool with a small pancake compressor (dont have the monster 220 compressor wired up yet) ... which is the better option? Also, I've seen varied opinions on whether its better to crack the plugs with a socket or start with the impact gun? Anything other tips regarding the impact method appreciated as well ... thanks!

I crack them and soak them.....

Then I hit them with an impact......

I use the lowest torque setting and keep going until its loose

My impact is a 3/8" drive 14.4 volt cordless snapon ......

I've seen two trucks,- the 04 and 05 models, 3V's x 2(same time, side x side) get it done with a cordless. They used my barn, tools to do it lol.

The only cordless impact I had out there at the time was a beat to crap Ryobi 18V.

It was cake, - no breaks and free beer. Just the way I like it.

I did mine with an 18V Dewalt. I just ran Techron for 2 tanks, did it on a hot engine and cracked them loose with a ratchet and then took the impact to them. All 8 came out fine.

Thanks all, got everything ordered ... just have to get some fresh beer and probably some Jack for when its done. Now I'm wondering if I can get it done reliably this weekend because I have to go TDY next week and I'd rather drive my truck. Either way, I'm ready to get this crap done. Later!

I don't understand. Because if a plug is tight and possibiliy going to break off, how does your method keep them from disinagating?
At the FORD dealer they broke 4 plugs..$90 bucks a piece. warranty coverd it.

I did a little reading before and seems getting the Ford dealer Motorvac service done before the plug change could help decrease the chance of a broken plug. But its like $150 for the service I think. Just a thought though. Goodluck with the change!

You must have a very good dealer, because they must have picked up the time for removing the broken plugs. Warranty does not cover breakage of plugs, unless there has been a major change in coverage. ESPECIALLY on an 04
