need performance parts besides chip, exhaust, and air fitler. If not know, parts needed to swap in a 4.6L in a 97 f-150 with 4.2L and man. trans.

rsmckinley, It would probably be cheaper and you would end up with the same HP if not more than a 4.6 V8 -- Send your 4.2 V6 to a good machine shop to be rebuilt and have them balance and blueprint it as well as port and polish the heads, while waiting for the engine work send your intake to Extrude Hone.

Then find a junkyard V6 .... you really think a 4.2 to 4.6 swap will take less time?

Actually, I have done some research into this swap and the only difference in the 4.2L and the 4.6L wiring is the Injector harness and the Processor. The main wiring is the same. But, A weekend will be a feat to achieve.

I believe you will have to change the transmissions also. Its gonna be a lot of work, but if you have found a wrecked vehicle with all of the accessories, you will be in much better shape.

I believe the 4.2 and the 4.6 use the same transmission, code 44U.Only the 5.4 uses code 44E.This was from the info I used to order my truck from Kelly Blue Book.

rsmckinley, no offense intended, but to pull off a V6 to V8 swap in one weekend would be quite a feat! I could see physically getting the V6 out and the V8 engine mounted in the truck over a weekend, but sorting out the electronic engine controls and wiring harnesses to get it running sounds pretty challenging.

They use the same transmission type (4R70W), but the bellhousings have different patterns.
The 5.4L uses the E4OD.

While the V6 and V8 may use the same model transmission, I would advise against using the V6 trans. In the past, there have been internal differences in transmissions of the same type based on the engine they are to go with. For example, and AOD trans for a 3.8 V6 had fewer clutches and other weeker parts than its 5.0 V8 counterpart, even though the V6 trans could physically mount on the V8. Of course since the bellhousings are different on the 4.2 and 4.6 its a mute point.
