1/2 QT High

Well I got my oil changed at a place in town, usually pretty good...until now. I noticed that there was oil on my drivers side frame, upon further inspection it appears that its coming from the oil filter. The same day I happened to come across my receipt from said oil change place and noticed that they put in an extra 1/2 qt . Can anyone tell me if I did any damage...enough to be concerned about, I'm no expert obviously so any help or advice on how to fix this is greatly appreciated.

Make sure everything is tight. Check the level and add oil if you need to. If you didn't leak too much oil I'm sure it will be fine.

If the filter still leaks, they might have left the rubber gasket from the old filter. You will need to remove it before attempting to start/drive the truck again.

If it was my truck I would do an oil change on my own before driving it, just to make sure everything is good.

How much oil leaked out?

I thought about the old gasket being left on too, it doesn't seem like a lot considering with oil on a dirty surface it tends to look like more than what it actually is. Everything is tight, I'm just wondering if a 1/2 qt is too much that the oil is finding a way out.

Thats good. 1/2 qt too much should not hurt anything, I also don't think it would cause a leak. I wonder why they did that?

I would still call the shop and let them know what happened. Your next oil change should be free.

Exactly what I was thinking I have the receipt that they put in and charged me for an extra 1/2qt, I have been going there for years. My parents and wife go there as well for oil changes and inspections. I like to help small local business but if he doesn't want to work with me I'm done.

It has to be the old gasket still on or the gasket is kinked or none at all. Idk I guess I'll just start doing it myself but I'm going to talk to him tomorrow. If it doesn't go well and he jerks me around, oh well he just lost 4 customers.

Give him a chance to fix it. If he's a decent businessman it won't be any problem.

Are you saying they charged you for 7.5 quarts? (assuming a 5.4)

Well I was told my 5.4 takes 6.5qts, so he charged me for 7qts this time. All my other receipts from the same guy say 6.5qts. I don't think it will be an issue with denying it or making it right at least I hope not. I would just drain it and do it all over myself but oil is kinda expensive and this problem didn't present itself until they changed my oil.

If you look at your owner's manual you will see that your engine takes 7 quarts with a filter change.

Either their calibrations on the oil guns are off or like I said before the oil filter is jacked up somehow. Either way it didn't start leaking until they changed my oil.

The extra 1/2 quart would not cause a leak. The filter is jacked.

Just out of curiosity, what brand filter do they use?

Well they use "premium" filters, but I get them to put on a Motorcraft filter.

Took off the filter and its fine, I looked more closely in the daylight and its not engine oil, power steering or brake fluid. I fear is its coming from the front diff. After looking at it more there seems to be a significant amount of oil underneath it.

Dropped the skid plate and looked closer, and I'm about 80% sure its power steering fluid I just can't see where its actually leaking. At first the oil looked a lot darker than PS fluid but I saw some fresh oil and I'm pretty sure its PS fluid. I'm not sure what else to do to find the leak, cleaned off some of the oil and cycled through the steering and still can't see where its coming from. Sorry if I sound totally clueless.

You sure they didn't just spill it while doing the service and didn't bother to wipe it up?
