Calling on 5.0 owners

Well, I just hit 6500 mile mark and and it already used 2 qts of oil! Is this normal for this engine? It's not leaking anywhere so I just assume its burning it..

I don't think theres enough collective experience with that engine for many to say. I think thats allot. Take it in and have the service guys check it out

Ford (and all other manufacturers) won't even look at an engine for "excessive" oil consumption unless it uses a quart in less than 1000 miles. A quart every 3k is acceptable and nothing to be concerned about.

Mine goes 6000 between oil changes and may lose a quart during that time...

How hard you drive, high RPM, towing, etc can all affect oil consumption.

My 2008 Mustang 4.6 goes through a quart or two between 6000 mile changes - but that engine is usually driven pretty hard.

Definitely heard of them "using" oil when new. I'm not sure exactly why. Personally, - from a big family of Ford owners, never witnessed one going thru oil like that. Not unless there's a problem. My 98 w/279,000 miles won't use a drop w/vehicle in tow or not. It's change every 3000 tho, so it doesn't have as much time.

Fords perspective , - If I used 2 quarts between changes, -it's normal. Idunoo, that's some margin, but okay.

I change mine every 6 months and I probably put 4,000 on it in that time. I don't use any measurable amount of oil in that time.. My old van used a little oil. it had 250k on it and it used a quart about every 3,000..

I think I'd still make sure Ford is aware ...take it back to the dealership. They may not do anything about it now....but it will be "on record"...then , heaven forbid, if something does go south...the OP has record of early issues...and in this way the OP is not just showing up a year or 3 down the road saying OH this thing used oil from early on. then its a your word against the dealerships type thing.

In all likelihood its just going through a "break in period" & consumption will subside.
I do agree that dispensing that much...isn't a good thing & I'd keep a close eye on it.

I had an '89 with a 302 that used a quart per thousand from the day it was new (on 10W-30 dino oil), a '98 with a 281 that would use one quart in six thousand (on 10W-30 synthetic), and now I have an '11 302 that uses a quart in three thousand (on 5W-20). The dealer gives me free oil changes for life, so I guess it will stay on 5W-20 semi-dino oil for a while.

I believe that some of the oil consumption is related to the thinner base weight oil Ford is specifying (5W). I also believe that generating 365 horsepower out of 302 cubic inches in relatively mild tune also has some bearing on oil consumption as does the relative weight of the driver's right foot.

My Uncle got a new 91' or 92' f150 with a 302...it used oil from day one...He got a new engine from Ford because of it...something about the cylinders were heat treated too hard and rings wouldn't seat?? (something like that.) Some suggested to remove about 1/2 of the coolant and work it hard for a day, & get it good and warm, to see if they would seat. Not sure who suggested it, the mechanic or his kronies in the coffee shop...anyway he got a new engine.
