Exclamation 5.4 Engine Oil Capacity

I have a 97 F150 Lariat 4x4 with a 5.4L engine that has a remote mounted oil filter.
When I changed the oil for the first time I added the six qts. that were specified in the owners manual for the 5.4L engine, the level was at the minimum mark on the dip stick. I added a 1/2 qt. and was affraid to add any more. I called two Ford dealerships and got two different answers. One said to put 6.5 qts. and the other said to add only six qts. I did not tell either dealership how low or how much I had added until they gave me an answer to what the capacity was.Has anyone else had this problem with there truck and what do you add.

Dear Alan,

This has been discussed here quite a bit. The factory specification does in fact call for 6 quarts in the owner's manual for the 4.6 & 5.4, but it actually takes a bit more than 6 quarts to come up to the "Full" line on your dipstick. I never put more than 6 quarts in mine, I don't ever buy another quart to top it of with.

It's up to you, and welcome to F150online!

Alan,

So long as the oil level is between the two marks, you're fine. It's up to you if you want to add the extra oil.
