88 F-150 Oil Pressure

I have a 88 F-150 5.0. I recently noticed that if I drive below 10 mph the oil pressure gauge goes all the way down and the red "Engine" light comes on. Everything is ok when I start the truck but after running it a little while it starts doing this. The oil pressure marks no oil pressure but the truck runs fine. The truck has a new oil pump and I changed the oil pressure switch to try to fix this but it did not help. What could be causing this? Any help is really appreciated.

What motor do you have? If it is the 5.0 you are screwed. Sounds to me like your rod bearings are going out. I've had 4 302's lose oil pressure around 100,000 miles due to shot rod bearings. Does the truck knock at startup? If it doesnt it will...also if you put it in Drive and speed up to about 65 then let off it will begin to knock. Maybe yours isnt that far gone yet. If it isnt...get rid of it ASAP. If it knocks on start up change your oil to 15W-40. This will tighten it up until you can get rid of it.

Find yourself a good 351...they are much more durable. Better still get rid of Ford all together. I have a 93 Chevy with a 350 and 160,000 miles. Oil pressure is as high as it was when new. Only uses half a quart every 3000.

sorry...just now saw that you do indeed have the dreaded 5.0. Get rid of it before you have to dump a thousand bucks into it.

Wow,Former Ford Man!
Such good advice. Surg,I'd look into the problem a little further before you throw in the towel and buy a Shovie. I had a 5.0 that sheared the oil pump driveshaft off, right after I replaced the oil pump. when I took the pump back off it fell out in two pieces. I still don't know what caused it to do this. Did you put the pump in? Or did the previous owner say they did? Was the pump replaced after you got it? Just for grins, pull the sender back out(this is what you meant by switch?) and make sure the orifice is not clogged up again. Do you have 100,000 miles on it? . You might get this figured out soon ( I hope),,,,,,98

Is it using alot of oil,but not as smoke out the tailpipe?

Surg, the 302 and 351 engines were bad about sludge
building up in the oil return holes in the heads and lifter
valley which does not allow the oil to drain back down
fast enough and pressure loss follows. If you shut the
engine off for a few minutes and restart and the pressure
returns to normal this may well be your problem.

Good luck!
