First get the a/c fixed! when you "ask" for Cold air the compressor kickes in and the idle speed is increased to compensate for the extra load. If low on 134a it will cycle on and off causing the "jump" in idle speed.

yeah man.... basically... i just wanted to see if anyone else has had anything like that..
is it also my observation that a LOT of the cars that run on the *good for environment* r134a it seems that they all run out of fluid much faster then freon... but hey is it worth the trade off???..
ill check that man.!.

GEARS

The cranks are cast at the Ford foundry in Windsor. The piston heads are from Zolner piston. They are a vendor Ford switched to 5 or six years ago.
When Ford made them there was a wide variety of grades. By this I mean Ford could not ( or would not spend the money) to get the pistons down to just 3 grades or sizes.
Now the pistons are shipped to Ford graded and packaged ready for production.
The crankshafts are shipped to our plant as rough castings and are machined and balanced at our plant.
When they out sourced the piston work we lost the whole piston department.

Patdon,
Firstoff, let me thank you for building such a good motor. I've got 29K on my '97 2wd Reg cab s.box and I love it. I understand the issues Ford has with its suppliers, but that timing cover gasket has got to go. Hopefully they're using the new metal framed gaskets instead of the crappy paper ones they used on the 97s. I just had mine replaced and now things are better. Let me ask you this question...did they get the 4.2 L (from the 3.8L) by stroking the motor or boring larger holes in the block???? Just curious. Keep up the good work. I love my V6 motor.

How can a guy named NASCARBILL be wrong?

Actually the bearing caps are a little larger, a little difference in the piston face, but basically the block is very close to the 3.8

patdon,

Do you think you could get a copy of the hp/torque curves for the 4.2L engine? The brochure shows the curves for the 4.6 and 5.4, but nothing for the 4.2. I asked the dealer to see if he could get it, but he said he tried a special tech number only dealers can use and didn't get anything. Is it possible they don't exist?

No, the 4.5 wasn't made at our plant. To answer your 2nd question , very few parts ( I can only think of a couple). I know that the rocker arms, rocker covers, connecting rods.
Then again, there are some differences between the Mustang 3.8 and the Windstar 3.8.

Shifter,

The gaskets Nascarbill is refering to ( I think is the timing cover gaskets.) I say this because the headgaskets are compound gaskets and are much thicker. If we had these gaskets when we were making the Supercharged v-6, we would still be making that engine

Excellent! Is it something you can email me or what do we do? If you need to use snail mail, I'll cover your cost.

email me: gaudent@qnet.com

If your like me, you read F-150 online before your email. I requested your home address or whatever address you would want these sheets sent to. I'll have to use snail mail, but maybe they use F-150's at your post office and they will get there faster.

Clarification, please, from NascarBill or patdon:

The thicker gasket (4 mm. vs. 3) was that for the timing cover or the heads?

And my truck is an early '98 4.2 - built last weeks of September '97. Would it have the thicker gasket(s)? When did they go to the thicker gasket?
