Ford 94 F1-50 engin shutting off

Hey guys,

I'm new so be gentle. I have a 94 ford F 150 with the 302 motor in it. I have been having some problems with the motor shutting off. The problems all started a year ago. The first problem that started happening was occasionally when i would try to start the motor it would crank and crank and not start. I found that if i left the key on for 30 seconds and tried to start it it would start. The problem got worse to the point where i could be driving down the road and the motor would just shut off.

First thing i did was change the fuel filter this did not correct the problem and it kept getting worse shutting off more often.

I started looking at the ignition system i found that the plug on the bottom of the coil was loose i pushed in the wire and cleaned the connector this seemed to solve the problem for about a month the truck would run fine and not shut off. Then it started doing the same thing again.

This time it would not start at all i cleaned the i cut the wires going to the connector on the coil and attached alligator clamps to the wires. This got the truck running . I also noticed that there was a wire that runs from the coil to an electronic noise suppressor that was pulled out. I went to the junk yard and picked up a new wiring harness and electronic noise suppressor that attaches to the coil.

Problem persisted at wits end i replaced the coil and took a look at the distributor. The distributor cap had corrosion on the contact points and rotor was a burnt. I replaced cap and rotor truck definitely runs better but is still shutting off occasionally.

Anyone have any ideas ? I have no clue what the electronic noise suppressor does Could this possibly be the problem it the truck was running without it connected ? Should i check fuel pressure ? I'm at a loss if you have any ideas please help!!!! Thanks guys

It could be several things but the most common that I've seen would be the Ignition Control Module or the MAP sensor. Both can cause the engine to just shut down or not start. If replacing these, use ONLY Motorcraft parts or expect issues.

I was looking at another form and it said that there is a gray and black Ignition control module ? And that the 94 302 F-150 takes the black control module is there any truth to this ? or are they both the same ?

The experts on those are in the pre-1997 forum. This V-8 forum is primarily for the Tritons.

If you'll go to rockauto.com and put in the criteria, it'll give you the correct part number.
