2100 RPM ON STARTUP

PICKED UP MY FORD F-150 IN MAY I HAD IT DELIVERED HERE IN GERMANY, SO I DON'T HAVE A DEALERSHIP CLOSE BY TO TAKE IT TO. THE QUESTION I HAVE IS ON START UP THE TACH AND ENGINE REVS TO 21-2200 RPM THEN SETTLES DOWN TO 1000 IMMEDIATLY. THEN AFTER WARMING UP GOES DOWN TO NORMAL IDLE RANGE. IS THS NORMAL? I CAN'T IMAGINE THIS IS GOOD FOR A COLD ENGINE ON A COOL MORNING. VEHICLE IS A 99 4X4 OFFROAD SC 4.6 LTR.5SPD. WITH LIMITED SLIP IN AMAZON GREEN.

Tophawk: I noticed you have a 5speed, me too. When I start, mine too goes way up, then down then settles down to about 700rpm (really hard to tell what it's pointing at) So I too would say "normal" PS: please lose the CAPS, it's hard to read

It is indeed normal and has been for most fuel injected engines for a long time. The reason is that it burns the excess fuel that is injected during startup and lowers pollution and keeps your catalytic converter from frying. You may notice this on other fuel injected engines if you look for it. It seems to be more prominent on engines with a centrifical fan clutch cause you hear the roar off the fan. I think it was government mandated as part of the clean air stuff.

So, now you know.

One more thing, the idle at 1,000 is normal also until it warms up.

the last 2 fords I have owned done the same thing at start up i think it is from a surge from the fuel pump to the injectors that causes this.

Seacrow is on the right path. From what I have heard the engine revs higher when the engine is cold to heatup the catalytic converter since it needs to be hot to do its job. As in the previous posts to help with emissions.

Thanks for all the input. All I have to worry about now is all the rubberneckers hurting themselves as I drive by over here. There are zero European spec f-150s'over here(have seen some Explorers). Just a few service men with 97s'and 98s' so far I'm the only one with a 99 F-150.
