1986 f250 engine swap help

I just got a 1986 f250 and was wondering what all wiring would have to changed to go from the v6 to a 302.

I dont think its a big deal as far as the wiring goes that year. Thats odd an F250 with a v6. Was that stock? I know they put the i6 in them but I dont recall ever seeing a v6 in a 250. Bet that was gutless. 302 wont be much better.. No real computer control I dont think so it should be just a mater of getting everything to work..

I agree with Jethat, unless something very unique has been done to your truck you have an inline 6, not a v6.

You do realize you are talking about changing from a 300cu 6 cylinder (4.9 liter) to a 302cu 8 cylinder (5.0 liter), right? I know there are more power upgrade parts for the 302, but in reality I think you are going to be very disappointed with the change in overall power. Stock condition vs stock condition I believe the big 6 made more torque than the 302 until about 3000rpm, which is pretty much where you need it in a truck, in my humble opinion.

Personally, I would suggest a couple alternatives to what you asked about. That era F250 truck came with as much motor as a 460cu 8 cylinder (7.5 liter), and would be fairly straight forward to drop in. By straight forward, I mean the there should be holes in the frame in the correct spots to install motor mounts, there will be adequate space under the hood, and you might even be able to use your current transmission. Also, OEM parts could be used for everything, no need for custom fabrication of anything. There are also plenty of options to increase the power of a 460...you could make big power if you wanted fairly cheap. All this and, I bet you could buy a 460 for about the same price you would pay for a 302 on the used market.

The other option I would suggest would be having some fun with that monster 6 cylinder. Those are actually very reliable engines with a lot of history, Ford built them for a very long time. Head over to www.fordsix.com, you can at least enjoy the history lesson.

Just my thoughts, figure what you paid for them,

Mike

If not a 460, if you want a V-8 at least get a 351.

im puting a 351 ina 92 in place of a 300, all the mechanicals are bolt on, as the factory did offer this combination. i believe your 86 will be the same. you have to remove the 6 cyl mounts from the crossmember, and bolt on the v8 mounts slightly behind them in the holes provided. the left mount is in the way of the oil filter, so they gotta come out. the only problem is, the mounts you need are usually torched by salvage yards removing the engine. also, the radiator tanks are on opposite sides on these 2 engines, but you can get creative with hoses if the core itself is big enough. thats about all the help i can give you, good luck.

Is the 302 set up for no computer control? What exact transmission is in the truck?
