Engine removal from 99 Expedition

I asked in the Expedition forum but I think I should have asked it here as it really isn't an Expedition only question.

I made 2 mistakes with my 99 Expedition. The first was using Fram oil filters from what I've been reading here. The second was when I ignored the ticking from my engine. At first, I thought it was my timing chains so I changed those but the ticking came back a few days later so I'm guessing there was something blocking the oil pump pickup tube. I'll find out for sure once I can remove the engine.

As for removing the engine, I've been following the instructions in the Haynes manual for removing my 5.4 but I'm currently stuck when it comes to disconnecting the transmission from the engine. The manual says to turn the engine and remove the 4 bolts holding the torque converter before removing the engine but my engine is seized. Is there some other way to do this or is it even needed?

Thanks,

David

Depends on how destructive you want to get with the old motor?

1. Remove heads spray pb blaster in cylinders let soak...beat pistons to jar them and try working the crank....

2. Remove/cut oil pan...pry on components till the crank moves...
....

3. Remove/ cut oil pan....cut connecting rods....remove rod bearing caps.....

4. Remove the bell housing from transmission case so that the torque convertor comes with the bell housing.....you'll need a new torque converter seal and this makes a mess....

Just some ideas.....

Ultimately it sound like I need to follow those directions though. I'll give 1-3 a try before I attempt to use 4. Thanks for your help.

I bet if you put a big ole bar on the end of a big ole wrench... it will turn. enough to get the TC bolts. I would pull the spark plugs and squirt pb blaster into the cylinders. Then give it hell with a big bar. I wonder if you remove the motor mounts from the block and the frame, completely take them out and disconnect the exhaust if the engine would be able to come straight forward at no angle. Might allow you to remove the TC with the engine. Not sure if it is locked onto the trans at all, don't think it is though. Someone else can clarify that.

Nvermind, it's been answered. Just make sure and jack the trans up at the same angle as the engine while removing. Don't want to bind up or the trans to drop once it comes un done.

if the starter wont turn it over at all you probably wont get it to budge, that starter puts down like 500 ftlbs to the engine.

if you're gonna be pulling the convertor off the trans, couldnt you just leave it attached to the flywheel and just slide if off the trans, once the bell housing bolts (on engine) are undone?

remove the engine with the converter attached just go ahead and pull it out it will come out attached. Makes a big mess trans fluid everywhere but I've done it it wont hurt it. Then remove the converter when its out.

Thanks everyone on the responses. I'll be giving it a try tomorrow and will hope I don't break anything else while removing it.

Pull all the spark plugs and make the ***** turn. Get a breaker bar with a 4 foot snipe on the end of it if you have to. You will have a very difficult time pulling the motor with the t/c still attached to the ring gear. I had about 1/2 clearance between the ring gear and windshield cowl as well as the studs on the timing cover and the a/c condenser. It is probably doable but I would make that motor turn.

Sometimes they just dont turn.. It WILL come out with the converter attached. I've done it. I broke off the crankshaft pulley bolt before I gave up and just pulled it. Doable.

pulling with convertor attached is worse case scenario. PITA and makes one heck of a mess. You will then have to lay in that mess.

Messy yes but also doable. If the engine wont turn just pulll it. Buy an extra large bag of noname kitty litter to clean up the mess..
