Question Vapor Locked?

Hello Y'all.

I have 2001 F150XL 4WD with a 4.6L V8 and manual transmission. K&N filter charger system with Granitelli Mass Flow Sensor, headers with cat-back systm. ~111k miles. I am in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Recently it has failed to start in hot weather after a short drive.

Sequence of events is as follow:

- Drive on local errands. Stop and go traffic.
- Attempt to start. Starter motor turns but engine does not start.
- Get out and grumble. Wait for 30 minutes.
- Attempt to start. Engine diesels for 30 seconds to a minute and then
stops. Engaging clutch kills the motor.
- Wait some more. Engine cranks but will not start. Towed to local shop.
Go home and drink beer.
- Car starts in the morning. Shop cannot replicate failure.
- Repeat.

O2 sensors and coils recently replaced.

OBD shows no codes.

Anybody have any ideas?

Trajan

Fuel filter and a fuel pressure test is where I'd start.

Same here. Intermittent pump failure.

Yea, or alot of loose stuff in the filter turning into a log jam after it runs a bit.

Not the fuel system. Replaced the fuel filter. The old one was still good. Good fuel pressure. 13 volts on the fuel pump. No loose wires.

Is intermittent fuel pump failure a real issue?

I would try cleaning the idle air control valve.
