Engines

As I can't really afford a new truck, I am considering buying a used '96 0r 97, F250. with a diesel engine. Unfortunately, I am not that familiar with diesel engines, and am wondering if someone could assist me in whether it is worthwhile to purchase a diesel, rather than gas engine. I have been warned about the high cost of maintenance, and problems with "cavitation" in the Ford diesel.
If these questions have been answered previously please accept my apologies. I just want to spend my money wisely. Are there any other links that may be of help.
Thanks for everyones time.

Oops, missed the previous postings comparing the two. Maybe, someone can still advise me about the reliability of the older diesel.

go to http://www.ford-diesel.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi then 1994-1997 Powerstrokes. I know of some people with the powerstroke, and they say its a very good diesel. WAY better than dodge or chevy.
They get good mileage, pull alot, can upgrade pretty good because of the turbo, like 90-120hp and 150-200lb-ft torque of the Banks Power Kit. They are worth it, if ya like pulling, the sound, the smell, and plugging them in a electrical outlet in the winter to keep the oil good.
It all depends on what you want. Pulling power or no speed. Ok pulling power, and alot of speed.
