what determines "change oil" light??

time/mileage calculation or does the truck actually analyze the oil??

The reason I ask is I got the light after only 4000 miles using Mobil 1. At least I assume my local drive thru shop gave me what I paid for. I changed it myself today so I know what I got this time.

I do believe it's based on time and mileage.

well that would explain why the light came on. I've been trying to ride the motorcycle as much as possible so the truck hasn't had many miles put on it. thanks!

There's been quite a few threads on this on some Ford truck sites (and other) over the times, but one thing is unanimous and certain...it does not do an oil analysis.

Doesn't it say "Oil Change" or something along those lines on the display?

You can change the intervals by going into the display setup. 100% should be 5,000 miles/6 months. If you change it to 50% it would be 2500 miles/3 months ect. This is for 04-08

Not sure what year truck you have, did they change the 09-10/11 to 7,500 mile intervals?

Yeah starting in '09 it went to 7500 miles. I believe the 11's are at 10K. I have mine set at 70% to be changed at around 5K

you caught me, it actually isn't a "light". my 2010 has a small led display that I can click thru using the mileage reset button. Similar to yours just 2 lines of text. If I remember correctly it said:
"Oil Condition
Change Oil"
If you do a "System Check" it normally tells you the % left of oil ie quality of oil.

Is it possible that the shop didn't reset the monitor? Did YOU reset it when you changed it?

If you used regular Mobil 1, I would not run it past 7500 miles/6 months - you need to use the EP and a Mobil 1 or similar filter to extend your interval.

yes I reset it when I changed it. I got 4000 miles and 6 months. The plan was 6000 miles. but the the purchase of the Yamaha Vstar I haven't put at many miles on the truck as usual.
