Question Synthetics?

I have a question I hope you all can help me with. I am thinking of changing my oil and starting to run Synthetic oil. Im wondering is there anything I need to do to prepare for this change? I have heard that once you start using Synthetics you can never go back to regular oil. Can someone confirm this for me. And my last question is. Have your trucks ran better since using Synthetics??

Thank you for your help.

You should dump a can of flush in your oil before you change to synthetic. Follow the instructions: "Amsoil say let engine idle for 15-20 minutes, the allow engine to drain as long as possible.

Optional engine flush

Black Dawg,

You can change at any time. The engine flush is optional but HIGHLY recommended if you are going to go with an extended change interval with the first change, i.e. the 12,500 possible on the AMSoil Series 2000 oil & AMSoil filter (actually 25K on the oil with a filter change & 1 qt add at 12,500).

If you are going to change the synthetic more frequently, the flush will not be as necessary and given a short interval, such as 7500, not necessary at all.

I cannot give you real data on the oil over long persiods of time or substanitate some of the claims made by people who have supposedly run engines 300,000 miles on AMSoil and say that when torn down, it looks like new. I can say that I noticed a difference immediately on my F150 & LS1 Camaro in that the engine got quieter and the operating temperature lower (the last measured with Autotap). Since noise cannot be good when parts are whacking about, and heat is usually a sign of additional friction, I have to guess that the oil is doing at least some of what it claims.

FWIW, I use the Series 2000 oil and AMSoil filters in both cars but change the oil & filter at 10,000 miles. Part of this is because it is cheap insurance for both expensive toys and part of it is because it is easier to figure out when I need the change

I have changed the oil at least twice in each car and have noticed that both show very little "dirt" in the oil and no breakdown that I can detect through my fingers (unlike my older car running el-cheaso 69 cents a quart). The oil coming out of the Camaro is a little smellier and so I had it tested. As I suspected, I am getting blow by on the motor and thus unfilterable organic crud int he oil. This raises the acidy which is not a good thing. THe truck doesn;t have this issue (probably because I beat on it less). So I am pretty happy with the "sort of extended" interval I chose.

Hope this helps.

Chuck

All modern synthetics are compatible with conventional oils. Period!

Now upon swithing over you could do an engine flush to remove some of the sludge and varnish that has built up by using a conventional oil. This is especially important if you are going to do extended drains.

If you don't chose to do an engine flush I recommend that you do an early filter change 1000-1500 miles. To make sure that the filter is not clogged, because of the high detergents in the synthetic cleans some of the deposits, and take all of that garbage to your filter.

Other than that you are good to go. If you need you can switch back at any time. Also if you need to add oil in a emergency you can put a conventional oil in with the synthetic.

Lastly, yes your truck should run smoother, cooler, and get more mpgs (5-8%)with synthetics.

Good luck
