2004 5.4 engine dies at idle.

The other day my truck was running fine. When I slowed down to stop the engine died. When restarting I had to keep it gassed to keep it running. Drove it like this for about five miles. After shutting it down for about 20 minutes I cranked it up and it ran fine. I have had a couple of other episodes like this in the past. I have 134, 000 on it and the plugs were changed out at 110,000. Also, it is not throwing any codes when doing this. Any suggestions?

Has the MAF and throttle body ever been cleaned? When was the fuel filter last changed?

Fuel filter changed at plug change. I haven't ever cleaned the MAF or throttle body. Is there a special procedure to do this?

Look in the index of the Articles and How To section. Good writeups there.

What was the outside temperature? Was your engine running a little warmer than usual? Vapor lock with this crappy ethanol gas is happening to many people. I had it happen to me this weekend and my truck was doing the same as yours. Temps here were in excess of 110 deg F. Saw 117 deg F yesterday. If it runs fine at nighttime, then vapor lock was the culprit. Which happens at lower temperatures with 10% Ethanol than with pure gasoline. Unfortunately pure gasoline is impossible to find in my neck of the woods.

It was pretty warm, I would say about 102. So yes, this is a possibility as well.

Radio, Have you found a fix for it? I live in Lubbock also and I am having the same problem. It will run fine in the AM, but if I drive more than about 15 miles in the heat, I would say over 95, it runs rough or dies at idle. It actually will get bad enough that it dies anytime you let off the throttle, even did it with the cruise set going down a small hill. I have cleaned the MAF after the first time it happened, which was the first truely hot day we had here.

dies unless given throttle

clean or replace your Idle Air Control Valve on the throttle body.

2004 5.4 3 valve?

IF this is a 3 valve 2004 (new body style) it does not have a Idle air control (computer does all the work now). Check fuel filter, run a bottle of cleaner in the gas, fill up with premium gas with no ethanol (hard to find but call around).

Thumbs up This was the the fix!!!

This is my first reply. This site is by far the best thing that ever happen to my truck. My truck was showing the same signs, would shut off at idle. Took it the shop and they said it could be my air control sensor ($115) or the idle control sensor ($500). I read this link and fallowed these beautiful instruction and Big Blue is running like a champ!!! BLUEJAY, YOU THE MAN!!! Cant Say Thanks Enough!!! http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...lies/beers.gif
