5.4L Odd misfire

1998 4.6 swap to 2001 5.4.
6k miles on motorcraft plugs
40k on house brand plug wires
0 miles on new Coil Packs (not COP)

I first got a cyl 4 misfire code. I figured it was about time to change out coilpacks. I got new ones which didn't help. I've read around 40 pages of threads, and figured it's about time to ask.

Things I have checked-
-Plugwire #4 not broken, nicked, etc etc.
- Wires not broken that are hanging above A/C Accum.
- All connections are tight
- Water hoses not leaking into cyl. hole.

I cleared the code after it happened, and had a few other codes from my vacuum line problem which I cleared up. It runs smooth when at idle. Putting a load on it causes it to run bad.. It doesn't jerk and I can't get it to trip the CEL. Any insight?

I would suspect the house brand plug wires.

Really? Do they just "give up" all at once like that? I'll go with a motorcraft wire and see if that changes. Also is cyl 4 the last to get fuel? My fuel filter has not been changed in 15k or so.

I have a 2004 Lariat 5.4 3v. I'm having the same problem. I had a timing kit put in and does the same. I give it a good amount of gas and it spudders and misses. When I'm traveling between 30-60 mph and ease in to the gas it jerks really bad. I dont want to spend another $1000.00 on repairs. PleaseHelp!!!

Alrighty guys I ordered new plug wires from RockAuto tonight. I hope that fixes it up. What about fuel filter and\or injectors? Is that possible or am I reading into it too much?

flexchops. I have a 2v 5.4.. No timing kit etc etc... so my problem isn't really related to yours at all. Your best bet would be to create a new thread here and go from there. Come to think of it.. I'm not even sure what a "timing kit" is. Some other tips would be to fill out your info page. When you post make sure you get the year, motor, trim, anything you've done to it and the miles on the truck!
Good luck
Sean

Yeah- New plug wires fixed my issue. Yours sounds different as I didn't mess with the chain/phasers. (sounds like you have a 3v out of a 04-08) mine is a 97-03 MY
